Spiritual Battle – Helmet to Guard Your Mind

Comments Off on Spiritual Battle – Helmet to Guard Your Mind, Filed in Sermons and Media, Videos, by CGP.

Fighting the Mind Worms Everyone who believes Christ’s message is engaged in spiritual battle. Yet, too many Christians are losing the war by playing old worn-out scripts in their heads. They have developed a negative mindset, and constantly their thoughts replay familiar refrains. And these messages, the “I will nevers” prove to be a stumbling block to spiritual engagement. When the mind worms of “I will never succeed” or “I will never change”, or “I will never measure up” or “I can never leave the past behind” start gnawing at us, do we have a strategy to combat them? Are we able to put on the helmet of salvation and overcome our cultural scripts, negative mindsets, and destructive thoughts? Paul gave us some advice in fighting these spiritual battles. He knew the source of the power to beat back the ugly, discouraging thoughts that sometimes seem to overwhelm us.

Spiritual Battle – Gird with Truth

“Gird our loins with truth” is a call to action. In Paul’s time, the band around the hips was used to hold the other weapons and tuck in the loose ends of a garment to allow for swift and agile movement. This freedom of movement was part of the spiritual preparation for battle. Peter wrote of “girding the loins of your mind” so it was as much a matter of mental preparedness and readiness to do the work that needed to be done. It was also the part of the armour that kept the other essential pieces in place. In a powerful metaphor, girding our loins with truth keeps our creative and generative capacity intact. Are we prepared for spiritual battle?

Spiritual Battle — Forewarned & Forearmed

This message first aired in 2020, but with the recent and ongoing conflict with Iran, even the current events are still relevant, and now the spiritual message is even more meaningful. Are we prepared to fight our spiritual battles? What does God expect? Since a Christian’s lifestyle is often at odds with that of the society around them, life can be a series of running battles. For there are never-ending conflicts with the adversary and foes both domestic and foreign. But Christ is returning as a warrior king to destroy the wicked, and it is those who are faithful to him that will join him in spiritual battle. And, though we must do battle even now, our weapons are not the same as those of the world around us. Are you prepared with the armour of God?

Christian Nation? – City on a Hill

In writing about the greatness and genius of America, Alexei de Tocqueville, pointed to the vital importance of the moral teachings – those biblical teachings – upon which the nation was built. He was the first to pen this oft’ quoted sentiment: ‘to understand the secret of her genius and power, America is great because she is good and if America ever ceases to be good she will cease to be great.’ Tocqueville noted that Liberty cannot be established without morality nor morality without faith.
John Winthrop, an early pilgrim leader built his worldview on a sure biblical foundation. His basic precepts were built on the understanding that the Word of God was a beacon of light and this light – the light of the Judeo Christian scriptures and their moral message needed to shine in the darkness. Many pilgrims thought of themselves as architects building a new society and as builders creating the ‘city on the hill’ as a beacon of liberty and righteousness for all. What are the attributes of the biblical ‘city on the hill’ and how do they help us understand our Judeo Christian heritage and our future
