In considering the state of the US government and the recent shut-down, one wonders about the sound-mindedness of those leading America. Perusing the news, one sees ample evidence that many individuals are in deep trouble due to a lack of sound judgment. The bible encourages us and offers advice and examples relating to the gift of the spirit of God – a sound mind that transforms us!
When there was “no king in Israel” they did not have a human king to lead them in battle, but they did have a King! Yet they forgot their King, and lied about God who had made them, delivered them, and gave them their rights. They denied God by breaking his laws and abusing his people, especially the widows and orphans while giving lip-service to worshipping God. Jeremiah Patton makes it plain that, our eternity depends on recognizing our King and acknowledging the leadership and authority in our lives of the one who inhabits eternity. Inhabiting eternity depends on our embracing God’s values and exercising God’s wisdom.
The Feast pictures the millennial reign of Christ and His saints as kingly priests. But at the onset there will be millions of people who have been traumatized by horrific global catastrophes. What quality of character will be of great importance to God in selecting his servants who will be responsible for helping these hurting people find the way back to God?

love and law
There will come a time when we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. How will we have confidence in that day? John assures us, “We know that we know Him if we keep His commandments,” because through them the love of God is perfected. What is that second great commandment that connects God’s love and law and leads to our being perfected through Christ in us?

Christ the vine, our lifeline
Moses could not do the work of God because he was a Prince of Egypt, well-educated, well-spoken, and a man of great deeds. Rather, it was only after 40 years of humble service as a shepherd that God could begin to work through Moses. We, like Moses, have God working with us directly and it is only Christ’s spirit in us that gives us the power to change and to serve God effectively. Christ, the vine our lifeline, is all you need for life.

God Remembers
God isn’t going to change. We are the ones who must change and be transformed to meet God’s standard so we might live with Him for eternity. We who are baptized and have received the Spirit of God are being transformed by the power of God working in us. Duane Nicol makes plain the scriptural advice given by John on our need to love others as a powerful tool in our transformation. He also warns us of the wiles of our enemy and the importance of our being dressed to do battle, so our adversary cannot hinder the spiritual transformation that God is longing to see in us.

Stumbling stones on the path to eternity
People who believe God are the potential inheritors of amazing promises of a world renewed, immortality, and a vibrant life in the family of God. But are there things that might make us stumble along the path to eternal life? Are there hurdles or roadblocks that might waylay us or trip us up so we do not inherit these promises? The scriptures warn us of “systemized error” that could keep us from attaining our goal. What are these stumbling stones and how do we avoid them, so we do not stumble?
