What’s a parent to do? God (Yahweh Elohim), as a father to the nation of Israel, provided guidelines to direct all the aspects of national life in the form of commandments, statutes, and judgments – elements of the everlasting covenant. Jeff Patton expounds God’s purpose and the nature of these instructions and the logical and natural consequences that flowed from these teachings as experienced by the nation and recounted by the prophets.

Would it surprise you to know that:

The covenant was not a contract
The “Old” covenant was not “done away”
Christ did not abolish the law, the covenant
The covenant was not a “marriage”
The covenant is everlasting

The Ten Commandments – Revisited 2021

Commandments revisited

Old Commandment for a New Situation

As new circumstances arise in society, our ability as Christians to rightly divide the word of truth and apply the biblical commandment with integrity and discernment is tested. Each generation needs to revisit God’s instructions to understand how they apply in new or evolving social and political situations. God’s principles are eternal, and they define for all time how we are to love God and love our neighbour. There is nothing new under the sun, and all the ways of men can be evaluated by the eternal standards found in scripture. We will reap what we sow, collectively and individually. So this series is to give you insight into the commandments of the Lord our God, and how they will help us avoid evil consequences, and gain God’s blessings.

The first four of the ten commandments given in Exodus 20:2-8 are summarized by Jesus in his teachings:

Jesus was asked: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. Matt 22:36-38 AMP

The latter six commandments given in Exodus 20:12-17 are summed up in Jesus’ response to the Pharisees:

And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matt 22:39-40 AMP

The Law or Teaching (Torah, the first five books of the bible) was not sufficient of itself, rather God expanded on Moses’ writings with the Prophets and Judges that followed afterward in the Hebrew scriptures. Similarly, the Ten commandments are the basis of God’s teaching, but by no means the complete Law. Jesus’ teaching on the greatest commandment in Matt 22:36-40 was a summarization of the Ten Commandments and the books of the Law, the writings and the prophets, thereby validating the original teachings in the Hebrew scriptures. These ten “Words” are of vital importance to any Christian who values Christ’s teachings.

The Ten Commandments are given below from Exodus 20:1-17 ESV

And God spoke all these words, saying,

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

The Third Commandment:

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”

The Fourth Commandment:

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

Do You Love Yourself?

For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life…Proverbs 6:23 ESV

When asked about the question of, “What is the greatest commandment?” Christ gave a two-pronged answer: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind… and the second is like it; love your neighbour as yourself.” This statement implies that our concern for others should be of the same magnitude and quality as our own self-love. How many people do you know who are caught up in negative self-defeating or self-destructive attitudes and actions? Scripture provides detailed instructions on how to love our neighbour in the Torah, such as supporting the blind, widows, and orphans, as well as encouraging everyone in the faith. But Christ also tells us that in order to truly love our neighbour we must love ourselves. This means that we must take action to care for our own physical, emotional, and spiritual needs so that we might be better able to care for the needs of others. Our well-being is important to our Maker. He wants us to set a good example to others, of what the life of a believer is all about. More

Jeff Patton examines the steps in the development of the covenant, and the nature of the relationship the covenant established. If you think God was “married” to Israel, Jeff challenges you to look at the difference between analogy and reality in terms of the true nature of the covenant.

That It May Be Well With You
-scriptural teachings on healthy living

fountain of life b

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
so, no more drinking from death-tainted wells!
Proverbs 13:14

I am not a health specialist, health practitioner, doctor, or medical researcher. Rather, I am a teacher and a writer who over the past four decades has had to search the scriptures and delve into modern research to deal with a variety of health issues – my own and others.
Our Creator admonishes each of us to study and seek for the answers to our questions and He assures us that those who seek will find, if we are looking to Him for the wisdom that will set us free. We must come to this search with the same attitude that David, the Psalmist, had when he spoke of his awe in understanding the human body and how ”fearfully and wonderfully” God formed us all. We must have this same wonder and respect for the miracle of life that our Maker has given us in order that “ It may be well with us.” More

Finem respice! Principiis obsta!  Yeah, you now know I must be an antiquity since I did indeed study Latin in the 8th grade in public school. But a little Latin and a love of history and the Bible does give me something of an edge when it comes to discerning the World Tomorrow. After all, as King Solomon the Wise once wrote:
What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.

Finem respice means “consider the end,” while Principiis obsta translates as “resist the beginnings…”
