Fruit of the Spirit: Christian Joy

1 Comment, Filed in Sermons and Media, Videos, by CGP.

In 2012 the challenges facing the West loomed large: from the fiscal cliff and economic free fall to the massacre of school children. But perhaps the issues of 2012 pale in comparison with what has happened in this past decade. It is evident in 2022 that these events in our world can rob of us joy. But what can bring us godly joy in the face of such trials and challenges? How can we be filled with the Christian joy — chara, that God promises through the power of His spirit? Jeff Patton explains how God plans to make our joy complete.

Searching for Light – Cultural Square One

1 Comment, Filed in Sermons and Media, Videos, by CGP.

In the face of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, we must ask ourselves, “Why?” The bible offers the answer, and points us back to our “cultural square one.” Yet many households have no relationship with our historic, cultural/spiritual roots, as they have no bible in their homes and no knowledge of the basic moral cultural roots that have been lost and forgotten by this generation. Yet the bible is our heritage, and our “cultural square one” that will give us light in darkness if we are willing to listen to its message. So whether we live in a society like that of ancient Judah during the tyranny of Antiochus Epiphanes’ rule of darkness, or that of our modern society of spiritual darkness we can have hope in God’s light.

Fruit of the Spirit: Peace of God

World leaders realize, “It is a moral imperative to pursue peace.” Yet, the Jews and Palestinians seek vainly for an elusive peace. Peace is something that the holiday season focuses on, yet the world has precious little peace. Why do we lack peace? What were the conditions that were to produce peace in a nation and between nations? How is the Peace of God going to have an impact on nations, and individuals, especially those who call themselves Christians – spiritual Jews?

Steadfastness and staying-power, that’s Makrothumia, the godly quality of long-suffering. The scriptures give us hope as we realize the depth of God’s patience towards us. Then, it gives us guidance to know how we are to express this quality in our lives as Christians – children of our Father, emulating Him.

Thankfulness in an Age of Covetousness

1 Comment, Filed in Sermons and Media, Videos, by CGP.

As people rush greedily to snatch up bargains on Black Friday, one is left to wonder whether Thanksgiving holds any meaning for most North Americans. Is thankfulness important? And if so, “Who should we thank, and why should we be thankful?” Jeff Patton rehearses the lessons that God wanted his people to know and that very few people seem to value to their detriment. Thankfulness has its rewards, as does ingratitude. We get to choose the outcome based on our attitudes.

Fruit of the Spirit: Self-control

1 Comment, Filed in Sermons and Media, Videos, by CGP.

In our world a lack of self-control can cause the fall of great leaders. As disciples of Christ we must exercise self-control, but it is not merely a self-mastery that originates within ourselves. The Greek scriptures give us insight into “kratos” the dominion that proceeds from within oneself, but not by oneself. God is the source of this mastery, that we must exercise in order to fulfill His purpose for us. Jeff gives us the comfort and encouragement of the scriptures that provide us the instruction about this fruit of the spirit, that will train us to be mature Christians who are able to reach godly solutions in our daily walk.
