Who is Your Spiritual Rock?
Building on bedrock is an important principle when it comes to constructing physical buildings. And if the people of Japan had been wise they could have predicted the results of building on sand dredged up from Tokyo harbour. Living along the ring of fire there should have been no surprise when an earthquake struck, liquifying the sand. They should have known the consequences of failing to build on a solid foundation would be catastrophic. But what about our spiritual lives? Who is your spiritual rock and are you building on a solid foundation?
The Rock of Israel
Moses’ song identifies the Rock of Israel as the father of the nation by covenant. But the nation forgot their Rock and failed to fulfill their destiny. They suffered defeat at the hands of their enemies and did not cry to their Rock for the deliverance they needed. Hannah and David, on the other hand, knew that the Lord was their Rock. And they called out to him and were delivered, because they had built that solid spiritual relationship. Many today, as in Jesus’ day, claim that God is their Rock, but this is not the reality. Why? Because they have embraced lawlessness and have build their lives on the shifting sands of cultural norms.
Jesus the Rock
Jesus’ was the Rock. And his sayings were taught with the authority given to him by the Father. Jesus’ healing of the Roman Centurion’s slave illustrated the man’s faith and a good understanding of divine authority. Jesus’s authority as the Rock, was conferred upon him because he had come to reveal the Father. Jesus was the ‘I am’ who had spoken on behalf of the Father from the beginning. And he acknowledged that he did nothing without the Father’s authority. This is why he was reliable, the Rock, that provided a firm spiritual foundation. He always did what was pleasing to his Father.
The Rock that Sustains Us
Peter understood that Jesus’ was the Messiah, the Son of Man and the Son of the living God. And it was on this great Rock, that the church was to be built. This was the same spiritual Rock that Paul identified as the one who led Israel. This Rock, the Lord and Messiah, sustained Israel in the wilderness. And in spite of their rebellion he did not abandon them.
This Rock is the same rock that has become the foundational rock and chief cornerstone of the church — the household of God the Father. Jesus the Lord is that foundation stone that is the precious cornerstone that is laid in Zion. And there is no other Rock besides Christ, because he alone has been tried and tested. So who is your spiritual Rock? There is only one Rock of our salvation. And he alone is the foundational stone of our lives.
