In a marathon race there can be a problem of becoming weary, lethargic, or sidetracked from the original goal. This is an analogy that Paul and other writers were inspired to use to illustrate the spiritual race that we begin at baptism. Often spiritual overcoming is likened to receiving a ‘crown’ — the victors wreath that was presented to those who were victorious in winning a race. We are reminded that we must not let anyone, or anything, steal our crown. So who are the thieves lurking along the race course who could distract us , delay us, or prevent us from completing the race? And how can we defend ourselves so we do not fall prey to these marauders? Let the scriptures provide you with the insight you need to maintain faith and achieve the great reward that God has in store for those who are victorious.
