The daily news provides abundant examples of people failing to care for those for whom they are responsible. Recently the world witnessed the dramatic failure of the designer of the Titan submersible to put the safety of his crew ahead of his personal ambition. But that is just one of many examples where leaders, politicians, teachers, parents or others in positions of responsibility have failed to care for their people. What is the solution?

Trained as a shepherd Moses understood this sacred trust to guard and shepherd God’s flock. Following in the footsteps of his Lord, who would later offer his life for the people, Moses demonstrated godly love for those he served, for forty years he was the one faithfully guarding the flock. Similarly, Jesus’ demonstrated his love for his disciples, and he encouraged them to emulate his example of protecting those who were in their care. The love that Jesus spoke about was not mere emotion, but commitment to choosing and doing what God prefers, by the power of his spirit. Do our spiritual leaders demonstrate this kind of love?

Lord Our Shepherd – Part 9 David, the shepherd king of Israel, understood the many functions of the rod and staff in caring for the sheep. How does the Lord use the rod (shebet) to comfort, discipline, and protect those in his care? How is the staff, the shepherd’s crook, used to guide and lead, so we can say with assurance, “your rod and staff comfort me?”
